He likes to collect things

his museum
I've just spent all morning tidying Liam's room.  I've kind of been shutting the door on it because we've been busy, and I've been sick, and so it's got a bit out of hand.  I've just sat down for a cuppa and I'm exhausted.

This boy of ours likes to collect things, he says he's going to work in a museum when he grows up, or maybe just have his own museum.  He wants dad to clear out our shed so he can use it to make his museum in.

The problems is he's not always very discerning with what he collects. He's mainly into bones and rocks and other pieces of nature, but I tell you I had heart pulpitations over what 'treasures' I discovered this morning. Oh if he knew how many things got tossed out the window into the garden, and hidden in the rubbish bin this morning.
his museum
I feel a bit mean sometimes, but I remind myself that I need to be the discerning mother who is there to help and guide him in the right direction.
his museum
There are only so many round grey rocks that one needs. And I have to draw the line at pieces of rotting wood, and shriveled up dry grass. And empty cereal boxes filled with bottle caps, bits of string, plant tags, tissue paper, iceblock sticks etc etc, you get the idea. I've learnt to check all his trouser pockets before putting them into the washing machine.

On kind of another subject, I left my camera outside, for two days, and it rained! Oh dear. So it's sitting in the hot water cupboard to hopefully dry out, I'm too scared to turn it on. So there are no new photos to accompany this post, though perhaps that's best, I suppose I could take an after photo now that the room is all straightened out, and purged :) but before, or during photos, would be a bit scarey.

These photos are from a few months ago of a 'museum' that Liam set up on the deck outside.  He wanted to leave it set up but I convinced him to remove it saying I would take photos of it all for him to print out and keep.

hmmmm...reminds me of another little boy I know...I really should just biff the cicada carcases and see how long it takes for him to notice.

my daughter is just the same, I felt a real mean mummy when I had a clean out the other day. It's mainly leaves and shells and feathers (that I can stand), but some dead insects and decaying natural matter had to go!

Hah! I'm laughing out load, I really truely thought I was the only mother out there that had to deal with this. Cicada carcases yes, leaves and shells and feathers yes, dead insects and decaying things yes, (and growing things and live things too agh!). And, hilarious! - toilet rolls! yes! I hide them now, I have to hide my paper recycling.

impressive collections! Mine likes to perform 60 Minute Makeovers - whenever he tidies up everything is so orderly and neat.

The really scary thing is that I am the one who likes to collect all those things in our house...I actively encourage my boys, so that I can pretend its all them...but the scull on the fireplace(thats me) and the shells and stones in buckets (thats me too) and the dead insects (hmmm well thats sort of me too)...tell him I think his museum is amazing! :D

It's in the genes I think. But his collections are very electic aren't they?! Perhaps he could be encouraged just to collect 'live'(dead) objects and ditch the galavanised nails...and where's his empty-cartridge-collection hmmm??

Ooops- I mean "eclectic" :0

Hi Mousey Brown, hehe, well hopefully you are a little more discerning than Liam.

Yes mum, definately in the genes. And after visiting your place in the weekend I realise it didn't quite skip you, though you are a mild version. I wish he could have hung out with great granny :)

Yes, he would have been a BIG fan of Granny tho' she didn't actually collect ear tags or bottle tops. Just expired foodstuffs hehe (hmm-sound familiar?)

Hope the camera is Ok. Your photos are just as treasured as Liam's collection. Last time in NZ the museum was on the deck which was videod to my iPhone. He doesn't know yet how it makes his GG smile each time I play it. He is my treasure. GG

what an industrious wee fella! I love it (and can also see where parenting the budding museum genius might be trying!)x
