My birthday in photos

Today marks the start of my final year of being in my 30s. I've really enjoyed my 30s, especially my late 30s, life is good. Happy birthday me :)
I thought for fun I would take some photos throughout the day...

Got to hang out here for extra long this morning. Got to have good videos chats with my mum and my dad - great start to the day.

Aaron and the kids combined efforts to make me the most delicious omelette for my breakfast! Which I got to eat in bed!

Liam gave me a massive paua shell, it's HUGE, it's larger than my hand, and I love it.

Isla gave me this scarf - she chose so well, she knows I love green - and scarves! (I don't know why this photo is so terrible and grainy).

We took the morning off home schooling and went opp shopping instead. YAY. Because that's just what you have to do on your birthday! It's kind of become a tradition of mine to go opp shopping on my birthday. See that basket there, it's quite tall, and it's filled to the brim, I got some very gooooood stuff!

And then we had gymnastics class, followed by a trip to the library to stock up on more books for the kids. And this book which I had ordered was waiting for me! Perfect timing!

So I managed to sneak in time for a cup of coffee and a sit down to peruse - it's so good, its on my book buying wishlist now.
And my beautiful watch is my birthday present from Aaron! (Which I've been wearing for a week already hehe).

Moe doesn't understand why he cant sit on your lap while you are trying to read.

Then finished the day with Isla's ballet class. She doesn't normally let me watch these days but I was allowed, only because it was my birthday! She is the little one at the front.

And now I'm eating Japanese food - my favourite. And as soon as I push publish on this I'm off to sit on the couch and put my feet up.
Oh and I had the coolest thing ever happen - my sister Frith is teaching at primary school and so she called me and put me on speaker phone and the whole class sang me happy birthday!!! It was awesome! Made my day!
Lovely day.
Feeling blessed.

Second hand wardrobe - my top tips

So anyone that knows me well knows how much I like visiting op shops! For two main reasons really - firstly I'm pretty frugal, I'm just not a big spender, I can't justify it to myself, and secondly I like things that are a bit different, I like finding unique and interesting items.
Plus I love that I can find quality items and handmade items that will last, and it's recycling at its best - I'm doing it for the good of the planet! (Can I use this reason when my husband asks about the latest acquisitions?)

So with that being said, most of my wardrobe, and my home is second hand. Often when I look down at what I'm wearing it is just my underwear that I have purchased new!

I found these Levis just last week, the perfect fit, they cost me $5. See what I mean! Plus that bag on the floor there I found the week before, I think that was about $5 too. And the basket on the stool and the one on the floor are now holding houseplants.

I know a lot of people are unsure when it comes to buying second hand clothes and in particular op shopping, and I've been told I just have good luck in finding good things. But there's no such thing as luck :) - so I thought I'd give you my top tips, and hopefully inspire those of you who are sitting on the fence to give it a go.

1.  My number one tip is be patient - don't expect to walk into your next op shop and pick yourself up your whole new summer wardrobe. Sometimes I come away with nothing, and that's ok, because you'll start to realise after you get into the op shopping groove that the dry times are balanced out with the times of abundance!

2. Visit often - By this I don't mean you have to be constantly visiting op shops, because who has time for that right (although it wouldn't be so bad). But rather, pop in whenever the opportunity arises. If you're driving past and you have 5 - 10 mins, just stop and pop in. You'll be surprised at the turnover in these places, and there is always new stuff coming in. And this goes hand in hand with the next point.

3. Don't give up on an op shop - give it another chance. Just because your first visit didn't result in any good discoveries, it doesn't mean your second visit will follow suit. Trust me.

4. Have an open mind - sometimes these places can be a little chaotic, and dusty, and at first glance just look uninspiring. But take your time to actually properly look through the racks and I'm sure you will be surprised at the gems that can be hidden amongst it all.

5. Be fussy! - just because it's less than $5, doesn't mean you should just buy it. Take time to actually try the clothes on and really think about whether it works for you - does it fit you well, does it suit you, will you actually wear it? Is it in good condition, is it a quality brand? Be critical, pretend you're paying $100 for it - would you still buy it?

6. If you're after something in particular head for Trade Me (New Zealander's) or Ebay. I have bought some amazing things off Trade Me! - Especially for our house during our renovation, which I will have to share in another post. With this one you do have to be patient once again, there is often a lot of pages to troll through. Also you do have to check it fairly often as items can get snapped up pretty quickly. It's a good idea to actually save a search, that way you can be notified when new items come up that match what you are after.

I hope my top six tips are useful to you, and I hope they might motivate you to give it a go yourself!
And just so you can see how all this random collection of second hand item actually comes together for me on a daily basis, I decided to just randomly photograph what I wore for the week (including the top photo). All the items below were bought second hand, (note: I didn't try to skew the results of this, I just wore what I felt like wearing that day), except for the pendant in the last shot which was made by my mum, and the scarf which was a gift from my mum (aw thanks mum!).

Wide leg Levis - op shop (the ones from the photo further up). Yellow sleeveless top - op shop. Black cardigan - op shop. Boots - Trade Me (I bought these just last week, and I LOVE them! I just searched ankle boots in my size over about a week, checking daily, these came up with a buy now of only $35, so I snapped them up!). Brass bangle - op shop. Watch - Trade Me (um, this was kind of awesome - check the bottom of the post if you're interested in the story ** It's too long to put here).

Green cardigan - op shop. Floral singlet - op shop. Skinny leg jeans - op shop. Black and grey metal bangles - op shop.

White cotton shirt - op shop. Levis jeans - Trade Me. Brass bangle - as above - (its a favourite). Scarf - gift from my mum. And that watch again! - as above.

Jeans - Trade Me, (high rise slim leg from Just Jeans - these jeans are my favourite fit, I have a pair already. So I searched Trade Me for another pair in a different colour). Cardigan - op shop (I love this - I'd love it as a cushion cover actually!). White t-shirt - op shop. Dolce and Gabbana shoes - op shop (score aye!). Brass bangles op shop. Pendant - handmade by my mum, the chain for it is from the op shop.

** The story of the watch if you're interested...
So It's my birthday coming up (3 days away now actually) and I asked Aaron if he could buy me a watch, which he agreed to, yay. So I really wanted a The Horse watch, gorgeous, but when I saw them in real life they were a bit too chunky for my skinny little wrist. So decided to go for a Rosefield, just as gorgeous and just a little smaller. Now the only problem with these watches is there's too many options to choose from! So I spent forever looking and pondering, and finally decided which style, frame colour, face colour - but couldn't decide if I wanted black or brown strap. The straps are actually designed to swap out easily so you can have multiple straps for your watch face, depending on your mood, you know! So I was investigating this so I could maybe get the other colour at a later date. The postage was really expensive for the straps so I decided to check if there was anyone in NZ selling the straps - and checked Trade Me, not expecting to find anything... and my watch was there! The EXACT one I wanted, the only Rosefield listing, what are the chances right! Meant to be I tell you! So the strap was brown so that sealed my decision on strap colour and I saved so much that I can afford to buy the black strap too if I want! The woman that was selling it had ended up with two of the same as her husband had ordered one for her not realising that she had also ordered it, so it was brand new. Perfection! Happy birthday me! And it just shows you it always pays to check!

Finding treasures for my home

I'd say that most of the things in my home are bought second hand, most of them come from the opp shop. In this picture I think the table and chairs, the black lamp and two cushions are the only things I bought new. I LOVE buying second hand, mainly because you can find cool unique stuff! But also because its cheap! And it's recycling at its best!

The side-board and the couch I bought off Trade Me, they took a bit of time to find, but everything else I just happened upon. I love seeking out hidden treasures in amongst the bits and pieces at opp shops. It's like finding a gemstone amongst piles of pebbles and rocks. Sometimes I think to myself how could anyone part with this? It's so awesome! One mans junk is another mans treasure aye!

Oh actually, the wooden face bowl (Freedom Furniture) and the grey/blue candle stick (For Keeps) were bought new too.
The only problem with opp shopping is sometimes there are so many good finds and you run out of room in your house to keep them all!
I have a little dream of one day owning a little craft/homewares/vintage shop near the beach, that is also joined to a little café that sells amazing coffee and healthy delicious food. - and then I would have a place for all my found treasure to overflow into!

A few treasures I found the other day... some of them have new spots to live in already.
The green vase has been added to the side-board along with the silver candle sticks.

Awesome big wooden bowl which is now on the dinning table, Liam has filled it with some of his rock collection, doesn't it look so beautiful! (Those brass bangles are from the opp shop too - of course).

Little wooden tray, now on the console table near the front door. It was a bit rough looking but all it needed was an oiling and now it's as good as new. (The two bowls are from the opp shop too. The dolls Isla made).

So what do you think of my little shop idea? Wouldn't it be cool. Watch this space, you never know, it may just happen one day! (Maybe I could just do an online version to start with??).

Friday wind down

Ahh... Friday afternoon, ... cup of coffee, ... a comfy corner to sit and read, ... an AWESOME new book to peruse thanks to my lovely sister. After a busy week, this little sit down is well deserved if I do say so myself.

I got interrupted, one child playing minecraft to my left, the other child talking in my right ear... so I had to sneak away to another quiet corner (with lovely afternoon sunlight. I love afternoon sunlight).
Happy Friday everyone, may you have a beautiful weekend and may you have the opportunity to find a quiet corner. xo

New couches

A really really giant parcel arrived yesterday, too big to fit under the Christmas tree. Our new couch! A Christmas present from us to us.

I think the kids were more excited about the giant box.

I've been on the hunt for another sofa for quite a while now. I had my heart set on a green velvet couch, I've always wanted one. But who knew it would be such a mission to find one in little old New Zealand! I went down every avenue you can imagine. Basically in the end it was just a bit too hard, perhaps if I had more time, and didn't have two children in tow everywhere I went I may have persisted longer.
I came across this new sofa during my sofa hunting mission and it ticked enough boxes for me to be happy about giving up on my green sofa quest.
I like the modern, simple Scandinavian styling, I like the neutral grey fabric, I love the wood detail around the bottom and that it's oak so it ties in with the flooring and also our dining table.

We had been living with our old black leather sofas for far too long and they desperately needed replacing. They were all saggy and the cushions were always falling off, not comfy at all. We bought them second hand about 10 years ago for only $200 so they had served us well but they were well and truly ready to retire.

We bought the grey leather couch recently off Trade Me and it's SO COMFORTABLE. It's only a few months old, the people selling it had brought it home and discovered it was a bit too big to fit into their lounge so we got ourselves a bargain.

It's looking so much tidier and fresher without those big black monsters in the room.
Because the leather couch is chunky though I do feel like I could do with a chunky heavy side table beside the oak couch to kind of visually balance it out. Do you think? A nice wooden stump one would be great (see my favourites for Friday post). Or I've always loved the Eames stools, bit out of my price range though, (I'm sure Freedom furniture used to do one similar, but I can't see them on their website now). But anyway, not spending any more money at the moment! Might have to have a look at my fabric stash though and make some nice new cushions :). And I've just had a light bulb moment now imagining some nice green velvet bean bags! ooh yes, that would be a lovely way to get my green velvet fix!

A trip to Ikea

No official Favourites for Friday today, though Ikea is a favourite, so we're sticking to the favourite theme :)
A trip to Australia is not complete without a trip to Ikea, (as far as I'm concerned anyway, - not according to Aaron and the kids, but fortunately they are very obliging of my needs!). You could spend hours wandering through the giant Ikea stores but I've become an expert at speeding my way through. It can be quite exhausting otherwise! Fortunately they have the food stop half way through to refuel tired children (and mothers)! This time around I visited their website before my visit and wrote a little list of things I was interested in, which helped to keep me focused and not get too distracted - though I probably did spend too long looking at the beautiful giant ridiculously heavy rug that I imagined I might be able to bring back with me, I don't know what I was thinking.
Still have my eye on that gorgeous green velvet sofa (more on that later).

So anyway, this is what I managed to stuff into my suitcase this time.
- Glass water pitcher and jug with cork lids.
- Wooden step stool. I had been wanting the black stained one, but they always seem to be out of stock. I figured I could stain it myself, but now I don't mind the light wood.
- Green cushions. Because I like green and they were only $5 so how could I not!
- Water colour pencils
- White board markers for the kids.
- Vanilla scented candles and tea lights. I have a weakness for vanilla scented things.
- Wooden tray.
- Wooden pot stand. Love this, they separate out so it's actually 3 pot stands in one!
- Folded cardboard light shade. So cool! Only $5! It was fun to put together, like a big folding puzzle and it goes perfectly in my laundry as I already had a green bare bulb pendant in there, so I just slipped the shade overtop.

opp shopping lately

Oh my lovely opp shops I do love you so. This is one day, one opp shop, so much good stuff.

These 2 blankets only cost me $2, the colours are just PERFECT for me.

I needed some more casual t-shirts, the white one on the right is brand new, label still attached, awesome. And the jeans are so Spring! Perfect since Spring is on it's way, yay!

This funny little log vase is quite cute and quirky, not something I would normally buy, but somehow it reminded me of my great granny, perhaps she had something similar?

We are off to visit family in Australia in about a week and I needed a hefty, roomy kind of bag that I could shove lots of stuff into, great for on the plane. The top zips closed so I'm not going to loose anything out of it when it's squished under the seat in front of me!

One of the best things about opp shopping is getting all your treasures home and deciding where you are going to put them and what you are going to use them for...

or here...?
